How Does Invisalign Work?

Find out how a clear orthodontic system could finally give you that straight smile.invisalign

We know that having a straight smile is important to many people. A smile is one of the first features a person notices about you and if you are in the professional world, having a healthy beautiful smile is important. Of course, we know that wearing metal braces for a year or more certainly won’t do anything to help your professional career, but our Romeoville, Naperville – Plainfield, and Montgomery-Oswego, IL, dentists are here to tell you how Invisalign could give you the results you want without wearing metal braces.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign has been around for a while, so it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise if you told us that you have already heard of it. After all, countless teens and adults have turned to Invisalign to fix everything from gaps between teeth and crookedness to crowding and other common dental malocclusions (“bad bites”). This revolutionary system doesn’t turn to metal brackets and wires to move teeth, but rather clear, nearly invisible aligners.

How does it work?

These clear aligners are made from thin, flexible medical-grade plastic, so they easily blend in with your teeth when they are worn. You will receive multiple aligners in your treatment plan and the number of aligners you receive will depend on the severity of the dental issues you are treating with Invisalign. For example, those with more severe malocclusions will require more aligners in order to achieve the ideal results than someone with more minor issues.

Each aligner is custom made not just to fit over your teeth but also to shift certain teeth into the proper position. Aligners are designed to move teeth a designated amount based on the treatment plan that our general dentists will map out earlier during the consultation phase. Each aligner is worn for two weeks. After those two weeks, you will swap out those aligners with the next set in your series.

In order to ensure that you get the results and that your treatment goes according to plan, you’ll also want to make sure that you wear your aligners as much as possible. This means only removing your aligners before eating, drinking (except water), brushing, or flossing. Aim to wear your aligners around 22 hours out of the day.
