Do You Know the Difference Between a Night Guard and a Sports Guard?

Posted .

At Valley View Dental, two of the services we offer our patients in Romeoville, Naperville and Montgomery, Illinois, are night guards and sports guards created in our own onsite lab in Romeoville, IL.

These custom mouth guards shield and protect the oral cavity from injury. After impressions are taken of your teeth, our lab technician will create a custom oral appliance to be worn over the teeth.

Night Guard

Probably the most common reason for wearing a night guard is to protect the teeth from wearing down or chipping if you are constantly grinding or clenching your teeth in your sleep (bruxism). This unconscious, destructive habit wears down protective tooth enamel leading to cavities, tooth fractures, failing dental restorations, and ultimately can lead to tooth pain, sensitivity and even tooth loss.

The second most common reason for wearing a night guard is for TMJ therapy and can help reduce head, neck and jaw pain. When you clench or grind your teeth, the pressure harms the oral and surrounding muscles, nerves, ligaments and teeth. The night guards are a thin, clear appliance worn over your teeth to keep the top and bottom teeth from making contact. They are custom-fitted for your mouth to cover the biting surfaces of your teeth, fitting comfortably for ease of breathing.

Sports Guard

Sports (or athletic) mouth guards are worn over the teeth when engaging in sporting activities to prevent dental injuries. Dental injuries are the most common orofacial injury people get when participating in contact sports, with more than five million teeth knocked out during these activities! Damage to the oral cavity is both painful and expensive so it’s a good idea to invest in a sports guard to protect your smile by covering precious teeth and gums. Sports guards are designed to protect the entire tooth above your gum line, unlike a night guard that protects mainly just the biting surfaces.

To learn more about these two types of mouth guards and how they can protect your dental health, we invite you to give our team a call and schedule your appointment today.  Valley View Dental’s lab in Romeoville offers quick turn around and affordable pricing.
